Bonniconlon show had something for everyone last weekend, with entries from across the country in the 600-plus classes of livestock across cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, horses and donkeys.

Overall champion

The Bostonia Herd from nearby Enniscrone added to its success this summer with its two-year-old Charolais heifer, Bessiebell Millie, sired by Newhouse Bigal, crowned the overall Champion of the show.

The prize for the overall reserve champion on the day went to Donal Maloney of the Ardnacrusha herd, also continuing a fine run of show successes after taking prizes in Corofin and Claremorris earlier this summer. Ardnacrusha Kylie, born September 2015 was sired by the well-renowned Sympa.

Commercial

The overall commercial champion was awarded to Brian Dyer for his January 2017-born Belgian Blue Cross Charolais heifer, exhibited on the day by Fergal Flanagan.

Shorthorn

The prize for the competitive All-Ireland Shorthorn Championship was claimed by Noel and Lisa Dowd’s Crega Heidi – this cow’s eighth All-Ireland title to date.

Belgian Blue

The Belgian Blue champion was owned by the Flatley brothers, from Glann, Kilkelly, Co Mayo. This January 2018-born heifer was sired by Dovea Genetics bull, Empire (EZN).

Simmental

Mark Neenan, Loughrea, Co Galway picked up the Willie O’Hara cup for the Simmental champion with his two-year old in-calf heifer Fearna Harmony. This is her third Simmental championship win this summer.

Angus

Gerry Kilgallon from Mayo Abbey, Claremorris picked up the champion Angus prize for his six-year old cow.

All-Ireland super suckler cow and calf

This is the inaugural year for this prize and it was claimed by Padraig Finnegan, Collooney for his classy pen of suckler cows and calves.
