Nevan McKiernan will not extend his contract as secretary of the Irish Charolais Cattle Society, the Irish Farmers Journal understands.

McKiernan's contract with the society will end in September, but it's understood that he is happy to remain in his role until a suitable replacement has been found.

It is understood that the decision has been made based on personal reasons and that McKiernan still continues to enjoy the role.

McKiernan became secretary in early 2016, replacing Nuala Hourihane. Before becoming secretary he was breed development officer with the society.

In 2011, he graduated from Dundalk Institute of Technology with an honours degree in sustainable agriculture. He was then awarded a Walsh Fellowship masters through the Teagasc/UCD Agricultural Innovation Support Programme.

This decision comes one month after the breed society appeared before the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, where it called for a review of the board of the ICBF and the abolition of the link between €uro-Stars and Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) payments.
