Finished cattle are in strong demand, with factories clearing their stores of beef cuts. Industry sources report a very strong demand for all beef cuts, with retail beef sales in the UK having performed exceptionally well in the runup to Christmas.

There had been some concern that a reduction in the level of retail promotional activity could affect beef sales, but this does not appear to have materialised.

The news that there will be no carryover of stock from the Christmas period into the new year will come as a welcome boost for farmers. Factory agents across the country are already demonstrating a much stronger demand for cattle than would be the norm during the Christmas holidays.

This has seen the base price for steers and heifers increase by 5c/kg, with a base of 3.75c/kg and 3.85c/kg now freely on offer for steers and heifers. Large lots attracted a further 5c/kg premium. With strong demand and no carryover off stock, indications are that this brisk trade will carry into the new year.
