The Church of England has designated a special vicar to agricultural communities in the UK following a rise in farm suicides due to increased financial pressures upon farmers.

Rev Chris Hodgkins is no stranger to the agricultural community, having worked as a herdsman before joining the church some years ago.

Known affectionately as the farming chaplain, Rev Hodgkins’ new role will involve carrying on his duties as vicar in the community, while also attending marts, ploughing competitions, agricultural shows and other known farmer gatherings.

Speaking following his new appointment, Rev Hodgkins said he is looking forward to taking up his new role and is aware of the challenges he may face with farmers who may want to keep their problems to themselves. ”I tell them I’m the new farming community chaplain and that I’m here for anyone who wants to talk.”
