Ireland should undertake a national Johne’s disease control programme, according to Australian vet Evan Sergeant speaking on behalf of Ausvet, an Australian consultancy group, at an industry stakeholder event in Portlaoise this week.

The three key parts of the Johne’s plan he has advised Animal Health Ireland (AHI) to implement are:

  • Further develop a voluntary herd assurance scheme.
  • Develop a comprehensive guidance protocol.
  • Create a national programme for bulk milk testing across all herds.
  • Speaking following the meeting, AHI CEO David Graham said: “It is likely to take another three months or more before any definitive actions are taken.”
