The decision to pull the Irish Limousin Cattle Society from participating in the Whole Herd Performance Recording (WHPR) programme was not taken lightly, Paul Sykes, the secretary of the society has said.

"The decision was not taken lightly as the society have always been involved in recording and remain committed to the process however issues have arisen which need to be discussed and clarity sought with ICBF," he said.

Following on from a society council meeting on Wednesday 23 May, where it met with Michael Doran, chair of ICBF and Sean Coughlan CEO of ICBF, the council decided to suspend participation in WHPR as a mandatory requirement for entry into the October premier sale.

The Irish Farmers Journal understands it is the intention of the society to meet with ICBF in the coming days and hopefully reach agreement whereby they may be able to reintroduce the programme in 2019.

Sykes commented that the Limousin Society remains committed to animal recording and the profitability of both pedigree breeders and the wider Irish beef industry.
