There is a shortage of farm labourers for dairy farmers, who this spring in particular faced a very difficult labour situation, Teagasc director Professor Gerry Boyle has said.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal at the launch of the 2016 National Farm Survey, he said a national initiative is needed to address the issue.

He confirmed Teagasc is prepared and is developing short, intensive “emergency-type” courses to train labourers.

“We will probably have to seek foreign labour in a lot of situations.”
