Enda Kenny has been part of the transformation of Ireland. His contribution has been significant and will be seen to have been when the history of Ireland’s development is written. A number of things stand out. His affability, his accessibility, but also the strength of character in times of crisis. His greatest contribution has been the reestablishment of Ireland as a credible economy and as a credible EU member. In dealing with the fallout from the financial crisis and the looming problems caused by Brexit, he has forged relationships across Europe that have brought the significance of the Irish problem before every member state. From a farming point of view, he was unusual for a non-farming politician in that he grasped the centrality of agriculture in economic and social terms, and he fully backed his ministers for agriculture as they pursued developments around the Cabinet in Dublin and the Council in Brussels.
