Farmers with horses are urged to be vigilant for any signs of equine influenza (flu), following recent cases in both thoroughbred and sport horse yards in Ireland and the UK.

The flu outbreak saw all racing cancelled in the UK for six days last week.

Highly contagious, equine flu spreads rapidly among groups of horses kept in close confines.

Signs to watch out for include a very high temperature (40°C and over), rapid breathing of over 20 breaths per minute, off feed, a watery nasal discharge, dullness, a dry hacking cough, swollen glands and general weakness. Isolate any suspect case or new animal into the yard for at least two weeks.

Make sure all vaccinations are up to date with booster shots given to broodmares four to six weeks before foaling. Contact your vet for advice.
