The latest monthly data from the European Commission shows that EU agri food exports were worth €12.7bn in November 2017, almost €1bn higher than in November 2016. Alcoholic beverages and sugar drove growth, with pork, raw hides and fresh fruit exports falling in value.

The US, Russia, Turkey and China were the fastest-growing destinations, while Vietnam, South Africa and some northern African and Middle Eastern countries imported less European food.

These countries have performed similarly over the 12 months to November 2017. Milk powder and infant food also emerged as major EU export drivers over the past year, with Ireland a key player in these markets.

Imports

Agri food imports into the EU also increased in November, but at a lower pace than exports. Brazil remains the main source of agricultural imports, with the US close behind.

The EU’s agri food trade surplus over the last 12 months is up 7.4% and has now broken the €20bn mark.
