The IFA will join the UK’s National Farmers Union and farming organisations from a range of countries, including France, Denmark and the Netherlands, to push for a Brexit deal protecting farmers at an event in London at the end of October.

“Our president will participate and look to meet with members of the UK government and hopefully some representatives from the European Commission in order to impress our position,” IFA director of European Affairs Liam MacHale told the Irish Farmers Journal.

The event will follow a meeting of the European Council of heads of government, where the outline of Brexit is due to be agreed.

MacHale said the farming organisations wanted to follow on from a similar event in Brussels in April, with participation from agribusiness – dairy co-op Arla provided a speaker at the time.

“It is important that big business continues to put pressure on the UK government and to show the public the huge effect that a bad deal or potentially no deal would have in the future,” he said.

“It is our farmers that have paid the cost to date if we look at the devaluation of currency and the value of Irish exports into the UK market.”
