Existing dairy farmers should be aware that there is a grant available for the replacement or retrofit of variable speed-drive vacuum and milk pump technology. The scheme is run in collaboration between the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and Teagasc and offers 40% grant aid to cover the cost of installation. It is open to all dairy farmers supplying all major co-operatives. All herd sizes are covered and both single- and three-phase electricity supply is eligible.

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Have a supplier number and be currently engaged in milk production.
  • Be registered with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine under the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme as a herd owner or herd keeper, or be a holder of another Department identifier.
  • The SEAI said farmers who upgraded their pumps in the past benefitted from reduced running costs of vacuum pump and the milk pump system, reduced noise and improved vacuum. Deadline for applications is 12pm on 29 March 2019. For details on how to apply, click here.
