Today’s sale at Aurivo Mart Balla saw another large entry of store cattle and cows with an entry of over 500 weanlings booked in for Tuesday’s sale. The trade was strong once again with strong farmer activity along with agents.

The best trade again is for in-spec heavy bullocks and heifers suitable for slaughtering under 30 months. All cattle over 500kg were brisk apart from plainer dairy crosses.

The bullock trade saw top-quality cattle over 550kg make €900 to €1,000 along with the weight at times. The majority of good R+ and U grade heavy bullocks sold from €780 to €850 along with the weight.

Lighter forward store bullocks from 500kg to 550kg were a strong trade also and sold mainly from €1,050 to €1,250/head.

In the past few weeks, the increased number of farmer buyers active at the ringside has been noticeable.

Stores from 400kg to 500kg were a steady trade on last week, with farmers again opting for the better-quality types. Prices ranged mainly from €700 to €800 along with the weight.

Plain quality stores were similar to last week if not a shade better. They sold mainly from double the weight or from €950 to €1,150/head.

This Angus-cross heifer, born June 2016 and weighing 575kg, sold for €1,140 (€1.98/kg).

Heifers

Heifers were a little stronger again this week with good farmer buyer activity keeping a floor under prices of good-quality stores.

Heavy heifers, like bullocks, were met with strong demand. Top-quality heifers over 550kg sold mainly from €1,200 to over €1,300 with ease.

Lighter store heifers are improved on recent weeks. Better quality R+ and U grade heifers from 450kg to 500kg sold mainly from €1,100 to €1,250 while plainer quality heifers sold from €1,000 to €1,100.

This Limousin-cross heifer, born February 2017 and weighing 385kg, sold for €770 (€2.00/kg).

Light plain stores under 450kg were a little better than last week, but there were fewer on offer. Prices ranged mainly from €800 to €900 for plainer types.

Cull cows

The cull cow trade saw continued strong demand for factory fit cows with prices of better quality types running from €1.80/kg to €1.95/kg. The majority of 650kg to 750kg feeding cows made from €950 to €1,150/head with quality having a large impact on prices.

There was a share of good-quality springing heifers on offer also. These sold mainly from €1,400 to €1,600 with some top quality types bid to over €1,900.

This Limousin-cross bullock, weighing 445kg and born March 2017, was bid to €845 but not sold (€1.90/kg).

This Charolais-cross bullock, weighing 450kg and born April 2017, sold for €1,095 (€2.43/kg).

This Angus bullock, weighing 515kg and born April 2016, sold for €950 (€1.85/kg).
