What I’m looking forward to this summer, once the COVID-19 restrictions have lifted, is hanging out with the lads during the silage season.

I really missed being a passenger in the tractors and trailers as they haul grass back from the field to the silage pit.

Last year, I could only go an odd day once my Dad would draw in for a day and I could be with him. My local contractor has a new silage trailer and big M this year and I am looking forward to getting a spin in them.

I’m also looking forward to going to the mart. I really enjoy the day when we get up early to load the cattle and go to Kilkenny Mart and sort out the cattle ready for sale.

We then wait about until it’s time for them to be sold. While waiting, we also go to the restaurant for breakfast. It’s always a good day out.

My friends used to always come to the farm for a bit of hurling during the summer and for my birthday we used to mow off a paddock and have all my friends over for a game of hurling.

On the upside, I spent a lot more time with my Dad on the farm and I learned, Dad with me, to drive the tractor with machines attached such as the post driver and mower. That’s really cool.
