“It’s unbelievable that we have been left without a Minister for Agriculture at such a crucial time. It’s just over 100 days until Brexit, something which could decimate Irish agriculture.

“We need our voice heard in Europe and the fact that we have had three ministers for agriculture over the last few months is far from ideal from Ireland’s perspective.

“With Commissioner Hogan I think people need to be careful in calling for heads to roll. He holds one of the most important jobs in the Commission and it’s a big plus for us to have an Irish influence there.”

“We feel left out in Donegal with no one around that Cabinet table. We’re not only the forgotten county now, the whole western region has been forgot about. We thought when Dara Calleary was appointed we would have a voice from the west but we’re back to square one. We need someone from the west who knows farming in that post.

“It’s a shambles. It’s going a take a minister a few weeks to get their brief and get to know their job. If we don’t get anyone appointed in the next few days, it’s a fair indication of what is thought about agriculture in Leinster House.”
