The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has warned farmers to never allow the bull into the parlour with the cows at milking.

“Bulls running with cows through the milking parlour may be practised on some dairy farms, however this does not mean it is necessarily safe practice,” a spokesperson for the HSENI told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“Farmers will be focused on the task at hand while milking which may lead to reduced awareness of the whereabouts of the bull. In the past five years, one farmer died as a result of being attacked by a bull in a milking parlour in Northern Ireland.”

The advice comes as part of the Plan Safe Spaces campaign, urging farmers to stay alert and have adequate handling facilities for their bull.

Due to under-reporting in the sector, the HSENI has said it does not have accurate figures for incidents in which farmers have suffered injuries as a result of bull attacks.
