The west region Texel club held their annual show and sale of in-lamb shearling ewes and maiden ewe lambs at Roscommon Mart on Friday night, 7 December.

The show was judged by Daire McManamon of Derrylahan Texels, Newport. There was a total of 32 in-lamb ewes presented for sale. After some careful deliberation, McManamon selected Tom Kenny's KTE 1703030 by Shannagh Whistler as his champion, with John Higgins' GII 1701001 by Proctors Yabba Dabba Do in reserve.

Hugh Mulvihill was the auctioneer on the night. The champion had been scanned in lamb to Forge Big Gun with quads, and sold for €1,000; while the reserve was in lamb to Turoe YVEF carrying a single, and sold for €1,050.

Top price

The top price of €1,250 was achieved by John Brooks, for a shearling by homebred Racepark Yamaha, in lamb to Quarryhouse Baby Guinness, scanned carrying twins.

Demand for ewes was strong on the night with a good selection of bidders. There was over 90% clearance of shearlings achieved, at an average price of €617 (ranging from €400 to €1,250); and 100% clearance of ewe lambs averaging €424. A top price of €500 for a ewe lamb was achieved by Michael Dwyer, for a lamb by Doon Hill Viking.
