In the south, there continues to be a good number of dairy culls coming to the fore.

Some farmers acted earlier this year to scan and cull empty cows quickly in order to reduce grass and winter fodder demand.

There are still a good number of cows coming to the fore straight from the parlour.

In the main, the average Friesian-cross cull cow is selling from the weight to €150 over the weight, while those carrying a little more flesh are selling mainly from €150 to €280 along with the weight.

However, where Jersey-cross cows are on offer, prices of €50 to €150 under the weight are common for light thin types.

Mart managers have said that demand for cull cows is still quite strong, with feeders actively sourcing all types.

Fleshed continental cows are still a very strong trade.

Some heavy cow-heifers are still making well over €2.00/kg, with some prices of over €2.10/kg being reported.

Fleshed R grade continentals are selling mainly from €350 to €450 over the weight, with feeding cows from 650kg to 700kg selling mainly from €280 to €400 along with the weight.

Where old and thin continentals are on offer, prices are steady, but in line with forward Friesians.

Old thin O grade cows are selling mainly from €150 to €250 along with the weight. Where old and thin cows are on offer with calves at foot, prices are ranging from €1,100 to €1,300, depending on cow and calf quality.
