Gardaí in Monaghan are investigating an incident where three cows died after being hit by a vehicle.

Passengers in a black BMW 5 Series were fleeing gardaí when the car struck a herd of 80 dairy cows outside Emyvale as they were crossing the road after milking. Two other cars received minor damage during the incident.

The car continued on towards the northern border. No arrests have been made.

Collision

Local farmer Patrick Colton told the Irish Farmers Journal that he was out with his herd on a minor road, walking them 200 yards from his farm into a field when the BMW approached. Patrick was ahead of the herd, with his brother walking behind.

“The driver of the BMW edged forward towards the cows when he spotted a gap and just put the boot down,” explained the farmer, who was still in shock over the incident.

“All you could hear was cows hopping off the bonnet.”

Three cows had to be put down after suffering broken legs and more cows received serious injuries. Patrick said his brother was badly shaken after the incident.
