The total number of non-reportable ladder related injuries is even higher and many of these occur on farms. Many farmers underestimate the risks involved in using them until they fall.

Most ladder injuries result from falls but other injuries are caused by lifting a ladder, slipping or falling when carrying it, or the ladder collapsing or falling. Because of the extent of the accidents, the Farm Relief Services Network (FRS) is looking at the option of providing a cherry picket service based around light trucks for use on farms by skilled FRS operators.

The work at height regulations do not ban ladders but require consideration to be given to their use. The regulations on the use of ladders state that they should only be used as work equipment where a risk assessment shows the use of other work equipment, such as scaffolding or a mobile elevated work platform (MEWP) is not justified.
