In figures released by the Department of Agriculture to the Irish Farmers Journal, it has been revealed that of the total 314 applications that were received for the Flood Compensation Scheme in Donegal, 40 of these included a claim for a loss of livestock.

The scheme was opened after flash flooding in August.

Loss of conserved fodder was included in 61 applications for the scheme. The remaining two categories were included in most of the applications.

The clean-up of damaged agricultural land and the repairs to fencing received 246 and 263 applications respectively.

Farmers were able to make an application under more than one category in the scheme.

Payment

According to the Fianna Fáil agriculture spokesperson and TD for Donegal Charlie McConalogue, farmers there have yet to receive any compensation.

“Shortly after the event, the Department of Agriculture opened up a compensation scheme and despite the fact that the closing date for applications was the end of September, not one farmer has received payment.”

The Department issued a statement in relation to payments.

It stated: “The processing of applications is currently being finalised with a view to issuing payments in respect of approved applications shortly.”
