Lollipop sticks

Lollipop sticks are great for summer art. Ask the kids to keep the sticks from their ice pops and save them for art projects. This project is an option for little children as it is nice and simple.

You will need:

  • • Lollipop sticks
  • • Colourful paint
  • • Glue
  • • Paint brush
  • • Clothes peg
  • Gather your collected lollipop sticks and a clothes peg. Choose some bright colours and paint the lollipop sticks and clothes peg.
  • Once the paint has dried, use an adult’s helping hand to glue the lollipop sticks to the clothes peg and create a little plane. Place the lollipop sticks as seen in the picture (far right).
  • If you have leftover lollipop sticks, make a few fireflies. This is great for little children as it is simple and quick.
  • Egg carton buttons

Art supplies can be expensive, so make some buttons for your art projects with an egg carton.

    You will need:

  • • Egg carton
  • • Paper scissors
  • • Paints
  • • Paintbrush
  • • Pencil
  • Cut out the flat lid of the egg carton. Draw circles on the cardboard and cut out the circles with an adult’s helping hand.
  • Cover the circles in a coat of white paint. This will cover up any images or writing from the egg carton.
  • Once the white paint is dry, decorate the buttons with colourful paint.
  • You can paint on button holes with a dab of black paint or create real button holes by poking four holes through the cardboard with a pencil.
  • Paper bunting

Create darling paper bunting to decorate indoor flower pots, or make a larger version for the children’s rooms.

    You will need:

  • • Two lollipop sticks
  • • 50cm string
  • • Decorative card
  • • Poster paint
  • • Paint brush
  • • Paper glue
  • • Paper scissors
  • • Pencil
  • Paint the two lollipop sticks a bright colour. While the lollipop sticks are drying, work on the following steps.
  • To make the bunting, you will use the decorative card and a pencil. Draw a large diamond shape onto the paper and, with an adult’s helping hand, cut out the diamond. Fold the diamond in half so that the top and bottom are touching. Trim off any excess where the folded sides do not meet up. Use this diamond as a stencil and cut out several more.
  • To finish the bunting, take the piece of string and lay out flat on your work surface. Place the bunting evenly along the string and make sure to leave excess string at the ends. Place the string inside the folded diamond. Make sure that the string is sitting on the folded line of the diamond. Place a little piece of paper glue inside the bunting and fold shut. Repeat this for all the pieces of bunting.
  • When the lollipop sticks are dry, tie the ends of the string to each piece. Now the bunting is ready to be displayed.
