The Irish Farmers Journal understands that Glanbia is considering how it might limit milk supply given the large number of new suppliers it has taken on over the last six years.

Rumours circulated this week that Glanbia is close to making an announcement to stop accepting new entrants or impose a reference year on milk supply.

A Glanbia spokesperson said this rumour is not true.

Glanbia milk supply in 2019 has been up considerably through the peak supply months, with increases of almost 10% in June and 12% in July relative to the same months last year.

Some 226 new entrants have joined Glanbia between 2015 and 2018

Some 226 new entrants have joined Glanbia between 2015 and 2018, with 53 new milk suppliers in 2018.

Large investments in milk processing have allowed the processor to take this milk from suppliers up to now.

A spokesperson for Glanbia said: “No decision has been taken yet. It is under review, however.

"There are a number of issues we need to consider as we have a co-op structure. In 2019, new entrants in the catchment area were accepted and current policy is once they sign the milk supply agreement, there is no issue.”
