Hoped-for GLAS concessions to allow farmers harvest crops from low-input permanent pasture and fallow land have been secured. Over a quarter of a million hectares of land can now be harvested for forage, eating into fodder shortages. Land where crops are inedible due to being idle for too long can be harvested for bedding.

GLAS catch crop flexibilities have so far not been confirmed. Most GLAS catch crop has now been planted, but it may be permitted to harvest or graze them prior to the normal 1 December deadline.

Announcing the measures, Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed paid thanks to Commissioner Hogan for his assistance. “My Department will continue to monitor the fodder situation closely and work with all stakeholders.”

Tillage farmers are reminded that the deadline for applying for the fodder production incentive is 17 September, with crops needing to be sown by 15 September.
