Defra stats show the UK has used 5.35m tonnes of milling wheat this season, 4.67m tonnes of which was grown in the UK. These figures show that 87% of UK milling was completed using home-grown wheat – a record level, which comes in the same season as the UK announced its intentions to leave the EU.

Maize sowings in France, the EU’s top producer, will fall to its lowest in at least 25 years, as two years of poor yields take their toll on growers. Estimated sowings have been pegged at 1.45m hectares – the weakest since 1993-94. Sugar beet plantings are expected to soar as an alternative.

Milk production in New Zealand is struggling to find its feet after a spate of hurricanes in the world’s top dairy exporter reduced the availability of pasture and in turn slowed production. The Global Dairy Trade price index is now at its highest level since mid-February as a result.

Global meat processor Danish Crown is offering its Danish suppliers a cash supplement of DKK0.50/kg (€0.06/kg) of additional pork supplied to increase the production of slaughter pigs in Denmark. The initiative is designed to reverse the increasing levels of live pigs being exported from the country.
