Saturday’s special show and sale of Scotch ram lambs at Milltown Mart saw an entry of over 140 on offer.

The sale is the first to be organised and held by the newly formed Scotch breeders from Kerry, Cork and parts of Waterford.

Previously the mart held an annual sale for Scotch rams, but demand in recent years was dwindling.

This sparked a small group to come together and market the sale in a stronger fashion in order to attract more buyers.

In total, there were about 70% of the rams offered for sale sold on the day. The trade was good for all good-quality rams, but plainer types were a difficult trade and a good proportion of these plainer types went unsold as a result.

At the top of the trade, a price of €470 was recorded for a top-quality Scotch ram lamb. The champion Scotch ram sold for €320, while the reserve came in at €270. The average price on the day was about €200/head.

In terms of demand, there were buyers from right around the country. The most demand came from local buyers, but there were bidders present from Tipperary, Galway, Mayo and as far afield as south Donegal.

As the sale is still in its infancy, the organisers are expecting it to grow year on year.
