A report on the future of the Irish tillage sector calls for increased support for crop producers. The report was compiled by the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and was launched on Wednesday of this week.

It must be seen as a welcome development for the tillage sector as there have been few recent acknowledgements of even the existence of the sector at official and representative level.

The report is wide-ranging and looks in detail at many elements of the sector, including horticulture, energy crops and organic farming.

The report gives many recommendations, with one major one being: “There should be a commitment to produce new action plans on an ongoing basis in order that the sector may have a constant policy direction.”

While no report will ever be regarded as perfect, this represents a significant body of work completed in a short time to explore new ideas and initiatives which could benefit the tillage sector.
