For the third year in a row, both Bertram Allen and Judy Reynolds have been honoured with the prestige senior The Irish Field awards in show jumping and dressage.

Joining them to receive coveted silver trophies at the K Club, County Kildare, on Monday last were Camilla Speirs as Senior Event Rider of the Year; Michael Pender as Junior Showjumper and Susie Berry as Junior Eventer.

Bertram, who remains within the top 20 on the FEI/Longines World Rankings, has now matched the record of Eddie Macken’s three-in-a-row back in the 1970s. His performances in the rich Global Champions and in Nations Cup competition have been just special during the past 12 months.

The same has to be said of Kildare’s queen of dressage Judy Reynolds. She showed her class from Rio to Gothenburg to Central Park in New York, she flew the Irish dressage flag as no one has ever done before.

Junior Showjumper Michael Pender also from Kildare is a young sensation as he proved so brilliantly on Marion Hughes’ young horses at the RDS and at the World Breeding Championships in Lanaken. He has recently been a star on the UAE circuit.

One more Kildare rider, Camilla Speirs, was a most worthy winner of the Senior Event Rider trophy.

World four-star events are few and far between. Just six exist, but Camilla and the Irish-bred Portersize Just A Jiff managed top-10 finishes at two of them. She came sixth at Pau and ninth at the truly world-class Badminton.

Just slightly in Camilla’s shadow is Junior Event Rider winner Susie Berry. Despite a broken ankle last June, Susie still record wins, seconds and no fewer than 26 top-10 placings during 2016. She has been part of Irish European eventing teams since 2012. Also honoured at this function were Gain Horse Feeds Rider of the Month winners during 2016. They included: Aisling Byrne, Clem McMahon, Alexander Butler, Conor McMahon, Ger O’Neill, Bertram Allen (2), Billy Twomey, Zara Nelson, Laura Glynn, Cian O’Connor and Judy Reynolds.
