The loss of large orders from the UK food sector and cancellation of orders in France is already impacting on hogget prices, which plummeted by 40p/kg at local processing plants mid-week.

Base quotes for hoggets slipped to 440p/kg on Wednesday, while in Britain they slumped to 420p/kg. With livestock marts closed across NI, there are concerns that prices will continue to fall.

The closure of marts is a major blow for the NI sheep sector, as approximately 90% of sheep exported to processing plants south of the border are sourced through this trade.

While exports south can continue as normal, without the marts it has created new logistical issues.

In NI, producer groups will play an important role in guaranteeing supplies of factory-fit sheep over the coming weeks until markets start to settle.

Stock going to a collection centre should be pre-booked and arrive at a designated time with all relevant paperwork completed in advance.

Farmers are requested to remain in their vehicle at all times to abide by social distancing recommendations. Staff at the collection centre will take responsibility for unloading livestock.
