Comment: New season early potatoes remain scarce as we await the April plantings. Some of the March-sown crops are coming on the market this week. However, many have not been irrigated and yields are below 3t/acre. There was some rainfall over the weekend but moisture deficits in the east are still up to 90mm and the outlook for Queen crops without water is not good. The most recent survey of remaining stocks of old-season crop would indicate that there is only sufficient volume to supply retail until the end of August. New-season main crop will not be available until the end of August and this will be expensive with only limited quantities available. There will be no cheap new-season crop available in the UK either. This will result in the peeling and processing sectors having to up the farmgate price in order to secure the required amounts of old season crop.
