Met Éireann has extended its snow-ice warning for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath and Waterford until midday today.

Temperatures plummeted to -4°C in some parts of the country last night, with heavy snowfall in eastern parts of the country and reports of snowfall starting in other parts of the country this morning.

An Garda Síochána has asked motorists to take extreme care while driving, as road conditions are treacherous in counties where the orange warning is in place.

The east of the country seems to have been the worst hit for the second time in just a matter of weeks.

A nationwide status yellow snow-ice warning will remain in place until 9am tomorrow morning, and farmers will be hoping that this cold snap will be over by the end of the holiday weekend.

A big fear for farmers is frozen pipes, with dairy units freezing up even before the temperatures dropped to their lowest last night.

Farmers also had to cope with frozen pipes this morning, as people filled tanks up to get water to animals.

Many dairy farmers will be worried that there will be a repeat of the weather a few weeks ago that caused milk dumping.

However, many co-ops collected milk on Saturday in anticipation of the cold weather affecting road conditions.

Farmers have been making sure that animals are adequately fed, and supplementing with additional feed where necessary.
