Anuga, one of the world’s largest trade food trade fairs had a visit from Minister Doyle on Sunday. He spent the day at the show which is held every second year in Cologne, Germany before heading on to the Council of Minister’s meeting in Luxembourg today.

The show has a strong Irish presence in the meat category with 13 Irish companies on the Bord Bia Origin Green themed stand in the meat hall. ABP had its own company specific stand, separated from the Irish stand by a walkway.

Northern Ireland

Elsewhere in the meat hall there was a highly visible Northern Ireland branded stand which was part of the same block as AHDB, the English levy board.

This stand featured the Foyle Food Group, Hewitt’s, Linden and Dunbia from the red meat sector. All of these apart from Hewitt’s have a strong presence in Britain so it was convenient to be adjacent to AHDB. HCC, the Welsh levy board and QMS the Scottish levy board had separated stands located elsewhere in the meat hall.

How the large meat companies with multi site locations identify themselves with allegiance to a particular national stand is always a point of interest.

ABP has, for several years, adopted a non-national stand though at Anuga just across the corridor from the Irish stand.

All of the Dawn branded companies were part of the Irish stand while Dunbia branding was used on the UK businesses.

Although Dawn has the controlling share of the joint venture between Dawn’s UK business and Dunbia’s, the joint venture carried the Dunbia branding throughout though with a new colour scheme featuring.

The meat hall also had huge stands from Brazil and Argentina as well as other major meat exporting countries of the world.
