For many farmers, the essential key to a smooth running farm is a good working dog. On Tuesday 27 November, JP & M Doyle MRICS Auctioneers and Livestock Salesmen held a sale of working dogs for the first time in Blessington Mart, Co Wicklow.

The sale saw 26 lots of working dogs entered and 10 lots of puppy pen section of working dogs entered.

Potential buyers

With over 300 potential buyers in view, Eamonn McAuley from Co Antrim saw just that when his dog Spot, a three-year-old male, sired by Sweep (RJ Hutchinson) to the dam Bet (D.Middlemiss), was sold for €3,500.

Brian Casey, a sheep farmer from Cahir, Co Tipperary, was the top bidder on the day and said he was drawn to Spot because of his “good breeding”.

Spot made the top price on the day at €3,500.

Eddie Hawthorne from Co Down received the second highest payment on the day, when his dog Jan sold to a buyer from Co Mayo for €1,300. Jan, a two-year-old black and white female, is sired by Glen to the dam Jess (T.Henning).

Jan sold for €1,300. This was the second highest price paid for a sheepdog on the day.

Finishing in the top three highest selling dogs was Craig, belonging to Peter McCroy also from Co Down. Craig, a two-year-old black and white male, sired by Mosse to the dam Fly (J. Maggins Mozz), was sold for €1,100 to a buyer from Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

The third highest payment at the Blessington dog sales was for Craig, belonging to Peter McCroy from Co Down.

With 10 entries in the "puppy pen section working dogs", John Driver from Co Wicklow saw his four-month-old pup Nap, sired by Toryhill Cap to the dam Babe, sell for €470, the highest price paid for a working pup dog on the day.

Clearance rate

There was a clearance rate of over 50% in the working dog section and a 30% clearance rate in the puppy pen section of working dogs.

Auctioneer John Doyle of Blessington Mart expressed his happiness at the overall turnout of the mart’s first ever sale of working dogs and hopes to hold another sale of similar nature in the future.

Speaking the Irish Farmers Journal after the sale, well-known sheepdog enthusiast Donie Anderson from Co Dublin said there was an “opening for a sale of this nature in the southeast of Ireland”.
