Oat-based drinks, recorded the biggest sales surge in US supermarkets in 2020, according to Forbes.

A report from Nielsen showed sales of the product were up 208% from 2019, totalling $249m in US supermarkets in 2020.

The trend is one which Irish farmers will be keeping an eye on.

In order to make tillage farms more sustainable and maintain and increase the area of tillage, which has a low level of greenhouse gas emissions, premium crops need to be grown which can increase profit on farms.

In 2020, Flahavan’s launched its own oat drink range and provided consumers with a homegrown alternative to the product and also an alternative to other plant-based drinks made from almonds and soy which have a higher carbon footprint.
