With grass covers improving, there are more dairy farmers looking to sell spring-calving heifers. While the number of sales being closed are still quite low, the availability has increased substantially in recent weeks. While prices quoted range mainly from €1,000 to €1,200, there have been reports of demand being low. Where sales are going through, prices of €900 to €1,000 are more common, given that they still require winter feeding and fodder supplies are tight. The largest groups on offer are predominantly crossbred heifers, with sellers looking to sell in job lots where possible. However, demand for calved heifers or in-calf heifers is a little better in some areas. Prices of these are ranging mainly from €1,100 to €1,300, depending on the quality and the figures behind the heifers. Those with little to no figures are being met with weaker demand.
