Cars and tractors crossing the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic will need a green card international insurance certificate if there is no Brexit agreement by the end of March.

FBD warned farmers and other customers of the change by text message this week.

It advised drivers to apply for the green card one month ahead of 29 March or any expected travel to the UK, including Northern Ireland.

Application form

FBD has a green card online application form, while the Motor Insurer’s Bureau of Ireland has paper application forms available.

“The point of contact for issuing Green Cards will be the insurance company or insurance broker you deal with,” the body advised, adding that the document would be needed in case of police checks.

The Association of British Insurers has issued the same advice to drivers of UK-registered vehicles about travelling to EU member states, including Ireland.

It warned that drivers would be breaking the law by driving without a green card.
