Representatives from a number of Irish dairy companies took part in a series of ‘‘speed networking’’ meetings with key Indonesian dairy importers in Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

A total of 75 business-to-business (B2B) meetings have been organised by Bord Bia and are akin to the marketplace meetings held in Dublin earlier this year.

The purpose of the meetings is to introduce Irish dairy companies to the key dairy importers and buyers in Indonesia. Representatives from Carbery, Dairygold, Glanbia, Ornua and Arrabawn took part in the meetings.

With Indonesia just 25% self-sufficient in milk production and dairy consumption set to rise by 5% per annum in the coming years, Bord Bia has identified Indonesia as a priority market for Irish dairy exports in the years ahead.

Dairy consumption in Indonesia is the lowest in Asia at less than 15 litres per person every year but this is set to increase to 21 litres per person by 2020.

Indonesia currently sources most of its dairy import needs from New Zealand, the US, Australia and the Netherlands.

However, there is a clear appetite among dairy importers in Indonesia to find new sources of product and members of the Irish dairy industry travelling on this week’s trade mission to Indonesia believe they can secure new business for Irish dairy exports.
