There is understandable relief that the rest of the EU supports the Irish nitrate derogation proposals. While it is not across the line, it should help the European Commission look favourably on the plan. The derogation is the lifeline for Ireland’s dairy production system, allowing farmers stocked with cows producing high solids to harvest grass growth. The measures to encourage early season slurry spreading fit well with good technical advice. Enforced changes to keep slurry out of waterways are always beneficial. We should not underestimate the level of political negotiating that has gone on to ensure a satisfactory outcome.
