Five Irish wins

Irish show jumpers posted five wins in Europe last weekend. Kilkenny’s Marion Hughes scorched to victory in the 1.45m speed class aboard Heritage HHS Fortuna (ISH) at the four-star French show at Valence.

Wexford’s Bertram Allen finished in joint first place in the 1.45. two-phase class at St Moritz in Switzerland, where unusually three riders finished on exactly the same time. Allen stopped the clock clear in 27.44 seconds with the eight-year-old gelding Izzy By Picobello.

Limerick-born Shane Carey scored two wins at the three-star show at Ciekocinko in Poland, when he partnered Contenance to victory in a 1.40m and 1.45m class.

Darragh Kenny landed Ireland's fifth international win when guiding Fixdesign Funke Van’t Heike to victory at Zandhoven in Belgium.

Supreme foal sale

The upcoming Goresbridge Supreme Sale of Show Jumping Foals takes place this Saturday, 3 September, at Barnadown, in conjunction with the Irish Breeders Classic, with some 14 foals going to auction.

Ryan strikes in Millstreet

Cork-based Michael Ryan was crowned the winner of the feature event at the 2016 Millstreet International Horse Trials last weekend, landing the Noel C Duggan Engineering CCI*** class with Dunlough Striker (ISH).

Ryan and the 11-year-old bay gelding by Maltstriker had been lying in sixth place following last Friday’s opening dressage phase and the combination moved up to second after the cross country on Saturday. During the final show jumping phase, he jumped a textbook clear round to pile the pressure on the overnight leader, Ireland’s Aoife Clark with Pink Glen (ISH)(TIH), who finished with a disappointing four fences down to drop down to seventh place.
