Ideally you should keep your horse in its normal environment and routine. If your horse is usually stabled, keep it stabled. If it normally lives out, keep it out as long as it is safe and secure.

Keep horses together with their usual companions if they are staying out overnight.

Do an extra check of the field to ensure there are no gaps in the ditch or broken fences. Check the field on New Year’s Day to ensure no foreign objects have landed in the field that may cause harm to your horse.

Ensure that you, or someone experienced, stays nearby your horse if you know that fireworks are being set off.

If you know there will be fireworks going off nearby and you think your animal will get very stressed, talk to your vet about sedation or perhaps consider moving your horse for the night.

Give your horse plenty of hay to keep them occupied.

Ear covers or cotton wool can help to reduce the noise.

Leaving a radio on can muffle fireworks and help to keep your horse calm.

If your horse is stabled, give them extra bedding and have high banks. This will help reduce injury if your horse gets frightened.
