The Killarney Young Farmers discussion group, like most other discussion groups and society in general are fed up with 2020.

Their normal monthly discussion group meetings and their Christmas night out has been disrupted by COVID-19.

In response to the frustration and boredom brought about by the overuse of Zoom, the group has decided to go on a team bonding session – a COVID-19 regulations compliant team bonding session of course – and raise money for charity in the process.

Their plan? To run two marathons on the longest night of the year, while pushing a milk cart.

"It's already having the desired effect," says group member Paudie O'Brien.

"The WhatsApp chat has seen a flurry of activity since we decided we'd do this. We're all chipping in helping to organise and it's a great distraction while at the same time it's raising vital funds for Kerry Palliative Care"

As of Sunday evening the group had already raised almost €5,000.

The plan is to run around the Castleisland athletics track and push the milk cart in relay one at a time on the longest night of the year.

"We'll start at dusk on Sunday night [21 December] which is around 4:30pm and we'll each take turns of about an hour and a half each running around the track. We'll finish up at dawn on Monday morning which is around 8:30am and we'll all go for breakfast then," Paudie explains.

The members of the discussion group drew lots to decide what time each would run at. Floodlights at the new athletics track in Castleisland will be on all night guiding the farmers pushing their milk cart around the track.

The group have set up a GoFundMe page for donations here.
