Kilkenny Macra na Feirme lip-synch group The Mistake took home the top prize out of 12 acts last Saturday night at the Macra na Feirme national lip-synch battle in the South Court Hotel in Limerick.

The group comprising Macra members from Mullinavat, North Kilkenny, Kilkenny City and Callan was made up of three girls (Anne, Aine and Grace) and five boys (Eoin, TJ, Patrick, Fabian and Kevin).

They kicked off their performance with Avicii’s Wake Me Up as Gaeilge before moving on to perennial favourites Lady Marmalade and Single Ladies. Every act put in a huge effort on the night and the crowd were kept well entertained. It was after midnight before we had a winner with judges Jerry Murphy from the Macra national office and Anna Marie McHugh from the National Ploughing Championship left speechless at times by some of the performances on stage.

Votes from audience members combined with the judge’s vote decided who the best lip-synch act was on the night. Waterford Macra kicked off the evening with Starship’s We Built This City and were followed by Sugar and Spice from Laois Macra, the Macra Maniacs from Kerry Macra, Kildare Macra, Mid-Westlife v Jimmy Joel from Limerick Macra and Muskerry Macra finishing off the first half of the show.

The executive group comprised national president James Healy and national chair Eamon Cassells doing their best with Take That’s Never Forget, getting act two under way and they were followed by Michael Holohan of Rathdowney Macra, Laois, The Cheeky Biddys from Offaly and Westmeath Macra, Avondhu Macra, the Farming Forecasters from Seandun Macra and, finally, The Mistake from Kilkenny.

Speaking after the event, Macra na Feirme president James Healy said: ‘‘Well done to everyone who took part tonight and for the tremendous effort all the acts have put in over the last few months in the buildup to tonight’s event along with their choreographers.

‘‘I would also like to thank all our sponsors, especially Glanbia who partnered us for this wonderful event.

‘‘As I always say, performing arts is a vital part of the Macra na Feirme experience and while a lip-synch battle is a different type of performance art, all those who took part will no doubt take lifelong memories from a wonderful experience. Congratulations to our winners on the night, Kilkenny Macra, for some excellent performances all round and well done again to all our acts for putting on another great Macra na Feirme show.’’
