The number of new-season lambs coming forward this week has risen significantly, with 6,310 sold at marts in the last seven days, a rise of 1,413 week on week.

Hogg numbers fell to 2,277, dropping nearly 500 week-on-week. Prices are holding better than expected, with the average for medium lambs at £2.29/kg live weight.

Abattoirs have dropped their price 15p with £3.95/kg being quote for R grade lambs. This is should not put anyone off drawing out early lambs, as we are still up year-on-year.

The ewe trade is steady, with average prices at £73.50/head for the 3,916 sold through marts last week. This is being put down to the weak sterling reducing imports and driving exports.

There is concern that sheep meat prices may dip in the coming week, as more lambs hit the markets and Ramadan comes to an end on Saturday.

However, any comments coming from politicians negotiating Brexit in Brussels could swiftly swing currency, having a dramatic effect on prices.
