Gardaí in Donegal town have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and that the dog and its owner have been identified.

The incident happened around 11am on Wednesday 8 June, according farmer Paddy Boyle, who posted about the incident on Facebook.

“We are appealing for information, if anyone saw anything happening on the island or a dog/dogs making its way to the island on Wednesday.

"[We are also appealing to] the farming community around the area be vigilant of further attacks on your flocks."

Responsibility

Earlier this year, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal Damien English said responsibility lies with dog owners to prevent attacks.

‘‘Dog owners must be mindful that with ownership comes responsibility. Owning a dog means that you have to feed, house and care for your pet, but you must also remember that you have to keep them under control at all times. Never let your dog out unsupervised, especially at night.’’
