Limerick IFA elected a new chair on Wedensday afternoon, and made history in the process.

Following a close contest, Seán Lavery from Shanagolden edged Angelboro’s Tom Hogan (the former national pig committee chair).

It has to be said, the place names in Limerick are fantastic, Shanagolden and Angelboro – Wild Mountain Thyme missed a trick there.

Lavery, previously the county’s sheep chair, makes history as one of his predecessors in his new role is his wife.

Mairead Lavery is a household name all over the country for her work with this publication, but prior to being a journalist she was very active in the IFA, and was county chair 20 years ago.

As far as anyone recalls, it’s the first time a husband and wife have both chaired a county executive, although Pat and Caroline Farrell from Kildare both currently chair national committees (Animal Health and Family Farm respectively).

The Clintons have nothing on the IFA.
