The mother of a teenager killed in a farm accident is suing the maker and the owner of the trailer involved in the fatality.

Janette Mangan of Barnaboy, Daingean, Co Offaly, has issued proceedings against the trailer’s manufacturer, NC Engineering (Hamiltownsbawn) Ltd, High Court records show.

Ms Mangan’s legal action also includes Thomas Boland, whose farm at Derryarkin, Rhode, Co Offaly, was the scene of the accident on 3 October 2015.

An inquest into Adam Mangan’s death last year found that he had suffered catastrophic head injuries when he was struck by the tailgate of Mr Boland’s NC300 trailer.

An engineer engaged by the HSA to investigate the accident said that although the trailer was badly maintained, there was a design fault with it.

Safety alert

NC Engineering and the HSA issued a safety alert including a recall of some trailer models at the time.

Offaly county coroner Brian Mahon said he hoped the evidence might save the lives of others working with similar machines.

Another serious accident occurred in Co Westmeath earlier this year with an NC300 trailer and a spokesperson for the manufacturer told the Irish Farmers Journal that both trailers presented issues listed as needing repair in last year’s safety alert, which can be found online at ifj.ie/ncsafety.
