DEAR SIR: In the 26 December issue of the Irish Farmers Journal, you carried a year-long weather forecast by self-styled ‘weather guru’ Ken Ring.

I would not comment on it except that I have recently heard people talking about the possibility of snow in early June – as mentioned by Mr Ring.

Forecasts

This man’s forecasts are still taken seriously by many people in this country, though a comparison of them with the actual weather so far this year shows them to be almost totally inaccurate.

Thus January was milder than average, not colder as he predicted. February got steadily colder not warmer and there is no mention whatsoever of the great snowfalls which blanketed the country at the end of that month and the beginning of March.

There was not a lot of dry weather in March or April, as promised.

Luck

He strikes some bit of luck with his predictions for May, but one in five months is hardly good enough for any farmer who is gullible enough to use that article as a guide for yearly planning. And, of course, the snow in early June is just not going to happen.
