Dear editor,

My name is Adam Heidt and I am 11. My neighbour has a dairy farm in Kerry Pike. Before COVID, I used to go and help on the farm after school during the calving season.

I liked being on the farm because I get to see the inner working of the farm and I really enjoyed it. I like being around animals. I know all the breeds of cattle in Ireland. I like caring for the calves, putting on their coats, and feeding them warm milk. I like to see the baby calves getting bigger and stronger from week to week.

I really like helping out on the farm in spring, and I missed it for the last two years because of COVID restrictions. Farming isn’t as easy as I thought. It’s hard lifting buckets of milk, and separating calves in the pen. I’d like to learn how to milk the cows next using the machine.

I like to see the technology involved in farming, especially the tractors and the big machinery. Some day I would like to drive a big tractor like my Grandad from Bantry.

I miss him.
