All the work of sowing is nearly done. The flower borders are a mass of colour with peonies and alliums producing a great show. In the vegetable plot we will soon be digging our early potatoes. Peas and broad beans are nearly ready, so too is our lovely white cabbage as well as lettuce and scallions.

All of these are fully organic and have no problems this year with bugs or blight. I think the soil plays a big part in keeping them at bay. One of the rose bushes got some greenfly at the start of the year. The garlic spray is great for seeing them off. Weeds are always there and my daughter Jenny sees to them as she keeps the hoe handy. They thrive after a showery spell, the worst being the seeds which blow in from neighbouring fields.
