John and Sean McEnroe of the Liss Aberdeen Angus herd in Oldcastle, Co Meath, are having a season of success in the show ring in 2019.

The herd claimed overall top spot at the association’s all-Ireland finals in Dualla two weeks ago and claimed the Leinster championship last weekend in Trim.

Collecting top spot in Dualla was their stock bull Mogeely Dreamer. However, it was the herd’s show cow Liss Minree P415 who performed in Trim.

This five-year-old cow claimed champion of the show and overall Leinster champion for 2019.

Sired by former stock bull The Moss Ethelorance, she goes back on a Bunlahy Bandit-bred cow. Shown alongside her June-born calf, she was the pick of Northern Irish judge Nigel Matchett.

Calf finals

The show also played host to the inaugural Connaught/Leinster club calf finals sponsored by Country Crest. This saw pre-qualified calves fight it out for numerous top accolades.

The McEnroe outfit again performed well here, taking the overall male title with Liss Mylo V858.

This January 2019-born bull is sired by the herd’s senior stock bull Mogeely Lord Hannon and is out of the homebred Liss Mylo. Standing reserve was Tom Reynolds with Knockadrinan Santa.

Tom, from Bornacoola, Co Leitrim, also stood top of the line in the female section, with Knockadrinan Ruda.

His growthy October 2018-born heifer is a son of the herd’s stock bull Drumgowna Norman and has been a multiple prizewinner throughout the season.

Standing in reserve were Michael and Barry Smith, with Lawsonsford Sugartown V432. This February 2019-born heifer is out of former stock bull Friarstown Evolver N274.
